Identifying Key SignaturesTheory Things   William Wieland
Major Key Signatures
  • C major uses no accidentals (flats or sharps).
  • Flats 2nd to the last flat ( Memorize: F major uses the first flat. )
  • Sharps 2nd up from the last sharp use the key signature
(Given 6 sharps, E sharp is last. This is F sharp major because
F is a 2nd up from E and F is sharp if you use the key signature.)

Minor Key Signatures
  • A minor uses no accidentals.
  • Sharps 2nd down from the last sharp use the key signature
(Given 6 sharps, E sharp is last. This is D sharp minor because
D is a 2nd down from E and D is sharp if you use the key signature.)
  • Flats 3rd up from the the last flat use the key signature
(Given 5 flats, G flat is last. This is B flat minor because
B is a 3rd up from G and B is flat if you use the key signature.)
