The Department of Psychology & Counseling


Our undergraduate program in psychology and graduate program in counseling are highly regarded, and we feel we offer an outstanding undergraduate and graduate experience to our students. It is our goal to provide our students with a well-rounded program that will prepare them for a career in psychology. As far as graduate studies are concerned, our intensive graduate program in counseling aims to challenge students to develop clinical skills that will allow them to work with a diverse range of clients.

The Psychology program at Northern State University emphasizes an applied approach to the field of psychology. Psychology majors will:

  • be exposed to scientific theory and areas of psychological research closely integrated with practical applications.
  • be prepared for various entry level human service positions.
  • become knowledgeable about their own behavior and the behaviors of those around them.
  • expand their knowledge of and insight into the discipline - allowing them to explore career opportunities in the field of psychology.

The knowledge base for all students in counselor education programs at Northern State University is organized around the following categories:

  • knowledge of self
  • knowledge of content
  • knowledge of the individial
  • knowledge of the approaches, methods, and techniques of counseling theory, and
  • knowledge of the self as a counselor and member of a learning community.
