MUSIC AT NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY
• Plentiful Jobs
• Brain Power
• Lifelong Enjoyment
Plentiful Jobs - Music teachers are in high demand, particularly in public schools, but also in private studios. If you graduate with a music degree from NSU, you are guaranteed a job. NSU has a faculty member devoted solely to music education courses. Employment opportunities also include performing, church music, music therapy, and piano tuning. MENC has an excellent web page listing Careers in Music and another web page entitled Dictionary of Music Careers.
Brain Power - Study after study demonstrates the important role of music in mental development and learning. Research by the Center for Neurobiology of Learning and Memory at the University of California, Irvine, indicates that three-year-olds given a piano lesson weekly, and who sang with a group daily for a year, scored 80% better on tests of spatial and temporal reasoning, an ability that underlies many kinds of mathematics and engineering. In Studio Thinking, Ellen Winner and Lois Hetland conclude that, "Students who study the arts seriously are taught to see better, to envision, to persist, to be playful and learn from mistakes, to make critical judgments and justify such judgments." According to the College Entrance Examination Board, students of the arts consistently outperformed their non-arts peers on the SAT and the longer the arts study, the higher the SAT scores.
Lifelong Enjoyment - Imagine doing what you love for a living. Unlike sports, you can continue to improve your own musical abilities throughout your life. Educators also have time for summer enrichment opportunities.
More Reasons - Winston Churchill, when asked to cut arts budgets during WWII replied, "Hell no, what do you think we have been fighting for."
Plato wrote, "Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, and life to everything!"
Daniel R. Mooney notes, "Of what value will it be to make a prosperous living unless you know how to live?" Music educators are happy knowing they have touched even one life and made it better - but like Mr. Holland, they touch a generation.
